Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. It has a population of 400,000 inhabitants and thought to be one of the prettiest cities in the Baltic. The old town is a medieval enclave with old walls, towers, winding cobbled lanes and buildings dating back to the Middle Ages.
Our group met late this morning after such a rigorous two dates in St. Petersburg. We had heard that Tallinn would be a walkable city and it was.
We took a walking tour around the city finding the Toompea Castle dating from the first half of the 13th century; and, the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox building with onion domes, in the traditional style of Moscow churches of the 17th century.
We found the tallest cannon tower of the old town called Kiek inde Kok meaning “Peep into the Kitchen,” referring to its view into surrounding homes.
Back to the ship where we found the Costa Atlantica berthed nexted to us.
Tomorrow: Sea Day – thank goodness for sea days!
